Adopt-A-Street Program

What is Adopt-A-Street?
In order to help beautify Mexico, we have begun an Adopt-A-Street Program. This program will support beautification, reduction of litter, and recycling. The Adopt-a-Street Program is a cooperative effort between the City of Mexico and citizens of Mexico who wish to contribute to the appearance of their community.

Both parties therefore commit to each other to perform certain activities for keeping cleaner and safer streets.

How Does It Work?
Citizens, community groups, churches or businesses pick up litter on both sides of their “adopted” street. The Adopt-A-Street group agrees to at least once a quarter for a minimum of 4 times a year and selects a segment of street at least 1 mile in length (where possible).

Groups are responsible for picking up litter only. Please use your own trash bags / gloves and dispose of trash through normal means (city residential trash pick-up).

Why Get Involved?
  • Litter is unsightly – it destroys the natural aesthetics of our city. Volunteering offers an opportunity for residents and businesses to take part in making our community a better place.
  • Litter is very expensive – city maintenance forces and seasonal workers pick up litter year round as resources allow. Even with this effort, the city faces a challenge to keep up with the issue. Volunteer help saves tax dollars and gives groups a sense of pride in their community.
  • Through the efforts of volunteers, improvements can be made which may not otherwise have been possible. A litter-free community is inviting to both visitors and prospective new residents and businesses.

Tips for a Successful Cleanup!
It’s important to spend time planning work assignments and the amount of time that will be spent cleaning up. Here are some helpful tips to make the day efficient and fun for everyone:
  • Consider assigning work teams and leaders, and also distribute trash bags before you reach the work site.
  • Many groups find that it is best to carpool to the site to reduce the number of vehicles parked along the street.
  • Estimate the amount of time for your clean-up session and agree on a meeting place for before and after work is done.
  • Coordinate cleanup with the city – contact the Community Development Department at 573-581-2100, ext. 315.
